The number of servings can be changed at the top of the ingredients list in a recipe. The number of servings equals the number of portions that you will prepare. If the number of servings is 1, you will prepare a meal for 1 person. If the number of servings is 2, you will prepare 1 meal for 2 people (or 2 meals for 1 person, if you want leftovers for lunch the next day).
A serving size can vary based on the dish that's been prepared and the volume of any given dish or serving can be different in your kitchen, or each time you make it depending on how much the dish reduces in size as it cooks. The easiest way to determine the serving size of a particular recipe is to think of it as a fraction or portion of the whole dish - 1/3, 1/4, etc.
